Westminster's Disaster Response Team

Upcoming Trip: November 4–10 in Gatlinburg, TN

Westminster’s Disaster Response Mission Team invites you to participate in our upcoming work trip to Gatlinburg, TN. We will continue work on homes that were damaged or destroyed during the November 2016 fires. We will leave Westminster around 10:00 AM on Sunday, November 4, and travel to Gatlinburg where we stay at the Gatlinburg Presbyterian Church, which has very comfortable quarters for males and females. We will return on Friday afternoon, November 10. The work team will eat breakfast at the church, pack a work site lunch and then go to nearby restaurants for dinner in the evenings. There will be plenty of work for all skill levels. We would love to have men and women of Westminster attend; we provide service to our neighbors and enjoy fellowship with other team members.

If you are interested in participating in these recovery efforts, contact Joe Gaines or Donovan Drake in the church office (615-292-5526).

About the Disaster Response Team

The media is full of stories of floods, fires, tornadoes and other calamities. Weather and natural damages impact people and communities in our region of the country, too. In addition to supporting relief efforts through prayers and financial contributions, Westminster organizes hands-on work relief opportunities for church members.

Working in association with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) office of the PC(U.S.A.), church members participate in trips to impacted areas to assist in recovery. The goal of PDA is to set up long-term recovery efforts; other organizations are ‘first responders.” PDA and Westminster help answer recovery needs after initial rescue efforts conclude.

Westminster’s goal is to conduct two team trips per year. Trips are usually one week in duration, leaving on a Sunday morning and returning the following Saturday. Our teams travel by church minibus and/or private vehicles. PDA organizes housing and some meals for volunteers at local churches; work is organized and supervised by local recovery partners.

Typically, we work on restoration of damaged houses. Work varies but usually consists of cleanup, painting, insulation, drywall, flooring, etc. Work is for all skill levels, including those people with willingness to help but zero experience. Team members enjoy meaningful work and fellowship with other participants.
